NARRATIVE- South Lake Tahoe Earth Day 2008

Earth Day celebrates the birth of the modern environmental movement that formed in 1970 as a nationwide grassroots demonstration representing the environment.  The first Earth Day led to the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the formation of the EPA. In South Lake Tahoe, Earth Day will be celebrated on April 19th by providing a venue to learn about ways to counteract global climate change through recycling/composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability, and reducing our ecological footprint, all while rocking out to awesome bands.

Continuing the excellent tradition of great music at Earth Day, this year we are pleased to present Jamie Janover & LYNX, Absynth, Ten Cent Lure, The Moonshine String Posse, Moo-Got-2, Ancient I’s, Ladymoon, and Trevor Green.

Waste reduction will be emphasized through the Zero Waste program. Booth participants are requested to minimize discardable handouts and implement other forms of waste reduction. All food vendors will be using biodegradable take-out containers made of either paper or a high tech cornstarch-based plastic. Food and biodegradable waste will be collected and composted by Full Circle Compost in Minden, Nevada. Facts and figures on American waste will be placed throughout the Event.

Central to this year’s celebration is the Clothes Swap where you pay a one dollar admission to be part of the Earth Day clothes swap.  Please bring clothes that are clean and in good condition with no stains or holes (please NO under garments i.e.: underwear, bras, bathing suits, etc...) and please NO shoes & socks.   You will receive one ticket per piece of clothing you bring (ten tickets maximum per person).   Clothes swappers will then get to choose one piece of clothing from the accumulated clothing, accompanied by a ticket.   If you don’t see any clothes that you like right away, no problem – you can go enjoy the festivities and come back to swap later.
All money proceeds go to Tahoe Youth and Family Services.

The Kids Push-Pull-Pedal Eco Parade will be returning this year and will begin at 12:00.  Grab your wagon, bike, scooter or cart; anything that rolls, but does not require a motor start.  Decorate it with colors and funny shaped things; hook on a horn, bells or whistles and parade it around! Also, kids are urged to wear a wacky & wild eco-themed costume.  Fun prizes will be awarded! Pedal lovers of all ages can delight in the excitement of the raffle with a Grand Prize Beach Cruiser!!! Other raffle items include snowboards donated by Head and Mac Boards, two refurbished computers by Electronic Waste Management, gift certificates from local businesses and much more. Ride your bike to the festivities and check out the bike fix-it booth and valet!

For more information about the day or to volunteer please contact 530-544-5710
